• Chao Foundation pledges $15 million to Rice for Asian Studies. See story.

• The Council of Editors of Learned Journals has given its award for the Best Special Issue of a learned journal in 2008 to the issue of  positions entitled "war, capital, trauma," edited by Tani Barlow.  Professor Barlow, leading scholar and theorist, is the founding director of the Chao Center and senior editor of  positions: east asia cultures critique.
